Cagliari (Casteddu in Sardinian) is the headtown of Sardinia, a shire of Italy.

The town has about 170,000 dwellers, or about 300,000 with its outskirts.

The town is first known in Phoenician times under the name Karalis, though it is likely to have been there before then. Phoenicians from Tyre settled in the town, and from there bought and sold goods. It later became a shire of the Roman caesardom.
